28 Jun CECCM  SUPPORTS A MANDATORY TRANSPARENCY REGIME IN THE EU

The Confederation of European Community Cigarette Manufacturers (CECCM), the largest tobacco industry Association in Europe,  calls for the EU’s transparency register to be made mandatory, and applied equally to all entities that come under its scope.

Speaking at an event hosted by the European Ombudsman in Brussels on April 27, 2016, Chair of CECCM Ronan Barry said:

“We are calling for a clear set of rules that should apply equally to any organisation lobbying in Brussels”.

“As an industry, CECCM and its members support transparency. We are fully compliant with the transparency register and code of conduct, which today is voluntary. In our submission to the Commission’s consultation, we  call for this to be made mandatory. This clearly demonstrates our commitment to transparency”.

“We are opposed, however, to efforts to exclude industries and companies, selling legal products, from contributing opinions, arguments and facts to the shaping of laws, sometimes under the guise of transparency. It is the role of politicians to choose between competing arguments, and we are against any efforts to shut down politicians’ access to information from any party”.

“Excluding any industry from discussion on laws affecting their business will only lead to bad legislation”.

Notes:

  1. The Confederation of European Community Cigarette Manufacturers (CECCM EU Transparency Register: 1496873833-97 ceccm@ceccm.eu ) is the largest European cigarette manufacturers association. It is a non-commercial association which represents the common views on regulations of major European-based cigarette manufacturers   (British American Tobacco, JT International and Imperial Tobacco Group). CECCM has a long and well established tradition of constructive dialogue with policy makers and civil society across the EU. CECCM serves as a platform for exchanging views and discussing European regulatory developments which enables its members to define balanced common positions and present them to the European institutions and other stakeholders.

  1. Ronan Barry, Chair of CECCM, was speaking today from the audience at an event Improving Transparency in Tobacco Lobbying, hosted by the European Ombudsman in Brussels. CECCM’s requests to participate in the panel debate were refused by the Ombudsman, and there was no industry representative on the panel which discussed transparency.
